The REES Remembers
This February, we were saddened to hear of the passing of film projectionist John Walker. Through the years, many have been stewards of the film splicer and the original Simplex projector at The REES. John H. Walker was one of those specialists. John’s biggest influence was his beloved grandfather, Hollis Falconbury, whose love and mentorship helped John to cultivate his mechanical skills as well as taught him how to be a film projectionist. John apprenticed under his grandfather at the REES Theatre for 2 years before taking over the job from 1971-1978. Together, they catalogued two generations of film titles shown with descriptive notes. These are now archived at the Marshall County Historical Museum in downtown Plymouth. John passed away on February 9th. We extend our condolences to the Walker Family.
Spotlight
Our first community spotlight is shining on REES Executive Board member Lisa Miller. Lisa Hillis Miller serves as the corporate secretary and legal advisor for The Rees Theatre Inc. More importantly, she has been a stalwart supporter of the Rees Theatre project as a member of the initial 'dirty dozen,' a leadership team of community-minded individuals who helped guide the six-year restoration process. Lisa continues as an enthusiastic volunteer that can often be seen assisting in the concession stand and sharing a smile. Keep reading for an interview with Lisa conducted by fellow board member Morgan Garrison.
Morgan: How long have you been involved with the REES? What made you want to get involved?
Lisa: I've been involved with the REES since the summer of 2017. Randy Danielson asked if I could help with the creation of the non-profit entity, and I almost immediately said yes. My husband and I moved to Plymouth and Marshall County partly because we were so charmed by the area and the people we had met. The decision to be a part of something that could bring even greater vitality and quality of life to a place we've grown to love was an easy one.
M: What REES-related accomplishment are you most proud of?
L: Obviously, the Grand Re-Opening was an emotional highlight, but I think I'm most proud when I see people of all ages from throughout the county and region come through the REES doors to enjoy an event. The REES exists to bring the community together to celebrate, learn, and experience the arts. To see that happening every week makes all the hours we have put in worth it.
M: What other organizations/events are you involved in around our community? (I want to plug all the other amazing stuff you do!)
L: I'm most involved with the Friends of the Plymouth Public Library, Tri Kappa, and the Marshall County Kid's Expo. Right now, I'm particularly excited that after a several-year break due to the pandemic, the Marshall County Kid's Expo is returning on April 13th to connect families with activities, camps, and services for their children.
M: What has been your favorite REES event to date? What March event are you most looking forward to?
L: Hmm...that's tough! I so appreciate the variety of events we've been able to present so far, but I love any excuse to dance, so I'm going to go with The 1985 Band. I'm really looking forward to celebrating St. Patrick's Day early with Kennedy's Kitchen on March 10.
Thank you, Lisa! We’re so proud to know you and we’re so grateful to have you as a team member!
