The REES Remembers
by Randy Danielson
The REES has touched many lives, including those of Mike Quillen and his older brother Art. Together, while in high school during the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, Art ran projection and Mike worked concessions like many others at The REES. During the demolition phase of the interior, the initials RAQ were found to have been inscribed on a wall and dated December 28, 1939. It was later discovered that the initials were those of Russell A. Quillen the union electrician that wired the Rees Cinema. Russell was the grandfather of Art and Mike. When word got to the two grandsons, they contacted co-chair Randy Danielson for a tour where they were able to set their eyes on their granddad’s signing.
Mike, age 71, passed away suddenly on April 11th and it was decided that a fitting Life Celebration would take place at The REES in June. Mike retired as a piping designer for Fort Wayne based Shambaugh and Sons, the fire suppression firm that designed and installed the sprinkling system at The REES.
His hobbies included playing guitar, kayaking, bicycling, wood carving, Jeep off-roading, model trains and spending time with his family and friends. He is survived by his daughter Hope and brother Art.

Spotlight
This month, the author of this newsletter, Morgan Garrison is in the spotlight!
Q: How long have you been involved with The REES? What made you want to get involved?
A: I’ve only been involved with The REES since December of 2022, but as soon as I heard that the board was looking for young people to get involved, I knew I had to get in on the action. I have so many childhood memories at The REES and seeing it brought back to life was a dream of my own that is now a reality.
Q: What REES related accomplishment are you most proud of?
A: Definitely this newsletter! While the original idea for a newsletter was not mine, I’ve taken this project on and I’m proud that after only a few issues we’ve gotten the readership that we have. I’m still learning and I know it will only get better.
Q: What other organizations/events are you involved in around our community? (I want to plug all the other amazing stuff you do!)
A: You might recognize me if you’ve ever shopped at Fernbaugh’s! I’ve been working there for about 2 1/2 years. I’m also looking forward to Leadership Marshall County Class 29.
Q: What has been your favorite REES event to date? What May event are you most looking forward to?
A: I don’t think anything could top my first REES event, Young Frankenstein! There’s nothing quite like being in a room full of people who are just as weird as you are. Everyone was laughing and reciting the iconic lines. The crowd had such a great energy!
The May event I’m most looking forward to would have to be a tie between the showing of Shrek, one of my all time favorite movies, and Quentin Flagg’s Blues Brother’s tribute show!
